I used to walk all the time when I was in college, and now all that walking has come to a steady halt. I still work out and walk around the area that I live, however I'm not getting that same amount of walking that I used to get. I've found that because I sit at work all day, I have tried to come up with some healthier eating habits that will help me feel good but also not sacrificing the yumminess of food.
1. Cutting Unnecessary Sources of Sugar
I definitely do not mean that I am completely not eating sugar, however I am trying to have the sources of sugar that I eat be natural based. This means instead of buying the preseasoned oatmeal apple cinnamon packets, instead I buy plain oats and add honey, cinnamon, and cut apples myself. I am getting that same yummy and bit of a sweet taste, but with more natural sugars.
2. Substituting with Oats
I have recently gotten really into cooking with oats, and that's because THEY ARE GREAT FOR YOU. Not only are they a great source of fiber and other kinds of nutritional value, they are both affordable and easily made more exciting. There are so many things that you can do with oats, they are very versatile and a great way to avoid always using flour.
3. Wraps at Work
Bread sometimes makes me feel weighed down and super full when I am at work and sitting all day. So recently I have tried eating wraps at work. I will usually get either turkey or chicken, some cheese, a crunchy vegetable, and some mustard and slap that all onto a whole wheat tortilla. These have helped me change up my day-to-day diet, and made me feel a little better while sitting at my desk.
4. Portion Control
Another habit that I have started to form while at work is not doing over-the-top snacking. Don't get me wrong, I always bring a snack :), but I try to pack it in a tupperware and limit the amount that I decide to snack on during the day. Some days I am better at this than others, but making this effort to portion control is great when you want a little of that thing you crave, but don't want to go over the top.
5. Whole Wheat
I have pretty much gone to whole wheat everything. Most white bread has sugar in it, so when going to the store to buy bread I will always check that the bread is made with whole wheat flour, because some breads claim that they are "wheat" but they are really just a white bread hybrid. Try whole wheat toast, peanut butter, bananas and cinnamon, or whole wheat grilled cheese, etc. all of these are healthier and still pretty yummy !
